Ø Definition

A computer is a machine or device that performs processes, calculations and operations based on instructions provided by a software or hardware program. It is designed to execute applications and provides a variety of solutions by combining integrated hardware and software components. Computer is derived from the word “compute” which means to calculate. It takes input from user, process it and give an output.

Ø Function

The four basic functions of a computer are: input, storage, processing, and output. The computer operates according to instructions stored in its own memory unit and can accept inputted data, process that data arithmetically; and through sequence-based logic, it can produce information and store the results for future use. All the applications of a computer derive from one of these four functions.
